Steamer earns a place on the counter (2008-02-17)
Purchasing the B&D HS900 Food Steamer was the result of several conversations with friends who had bought another type. This one will steam vegetables to crisp perfection as well as making rice without the sticky, clumpy problems others have. Its best feature is its timer which automatically turns it off. Set it and the rice is taken care of. It has an "aroma" thingy that is supposed to infuse the veggies with the smell and flavor of your choice of spices without actually adding the spice but I haven't used that option yet and don't really see a need too. What the thingy does do that sets this steamer apart from others is that it keeps the condensate from dripping back into the water that is used to make the steam and keeps the boiling area clean. No more weird burning smell and a breeze to clean: dump out the water and dry with a towel. All the parts, except for the base, go into the Dish Washer. The parts then stack for storage. However, the stack is a smidgen unstable resulting in probable droppage (especially when I do it) while storing, hence, I leave mine out on the counter as I use it about 6 times a week anyway. It has earned a place right next to the coffee maker.
good but ... (2007-11-17)
maybe I didn't buy the best size steamer for my needs. I use it mostly to steam vegetables and rice for my dogs who are on prescription dog food and have to eat a very low fat diet. It seems like the large size of the product doesn't match the small amount of vegetables you can cook at one time. I've also tried eggs but it's definitely easier to cook hard-boiled eggs on the stove top. So far the rice seems lumpy but perhaps I'm not getting a precise enough measurement on the rice and/or water used. You can also boil chicken and fish in this model. Haven't tried it yet but will soon.
Black & Decker Steamer Plus (2007-11-16)
I have had a Black & Decker food steamer for 12 years but a part has worn out, so, it was cheaper to purchase an entire (not new) unit than order a replacement "part" from Black & Decker. I'm totally satisfied with my purchase and would recommend this kitchen appliance over most anything else for an average kitchen other than maybe a coffeemaker.
B&D steamer (2007-10-30)
I have been quite happy with my purchase it does everything it was advertised to do. We particularly enjoy summer squash done this way. If I have any issue it would be with carrots, They tend to stain the white plastic parts a light yellow. not a big problem since the contact areas are out of sight when the unit is assembled on the counter.
